PTE Score for 189 Visa: Current 0, 10, and 20-Point Thresholds

pte score for 189 visa applicants is no longer a simple “50, 65 or 79 in every skill” rule for a new test. For PTE Academic taken on or after 7 August 2025, Competent English requires at least 47 listening, 48 reading, 51 writing and 54 speaking; Proficient English requires 58, 59, 69 and 76; and Superior English requires 69, 70, 85 and 88. For subclass 189, those levels correspond to 0, 10 and 20 English-language points respectively.
Direct answer
For pte score for 189 visa planning, assess all four PTE components separately. Competent English satisfies the subclass 189 English minimum but does not add English points. Proficient English adds 10 points under Schedule 6D of the Migration Regulations. Superior English adds 20. You still need at least 65 total points to be eligible for an invitation, and reaching 65 does not guarantee that Home Affairs will invite you.
0
English points
Competent English; minimum English level for subclass 189.
10
English points
Proficient English under the General Skilled Migration points test.
20
English points
Superior English; maximum points available for English.

Current PTE Academic Thresholds for Subclass 189

The current pte score for 189 visa calculation depends first on when you took PTE Academic. The Department of Home Affairs changed the approved English-test framework on 7 August 2025. The current scores below apply to PTE Academic tests taken on or after that date and are published by Home Affairs in its pages for Competent English, Proficient English and Superior English.

Superior

Official rule: each component must reach the minimum for the English level you claim. Home Affairs does not convert these subclass 189 migration categories from one PTE overall score. The legal score settings are in the Migration (Specification of Language Tests, Test Scores and Passports) Instrument 2025, which commenced on 7 August 2025.

This creates an important practical difference from older PTE advice. A new-test result can be Proficient even though the four required scores are not identical, and the speaking requirement is materially higher than the listening requirement. Likewise, Superior English requires writing 85 and speaking 88, not merely an overall PTE result that looks high.

Why the Old PTE 50 / 65 / 79 Chart Still Appears Online

If you took PTE Academic on or before 6 August 2025, the previous score table can still matter. Home Affairs currently says qualifying pre-change results may be used as English evidence for visa purposes until 6 August 2028 inclusive, depending on the visa and the applicable validity rules. For those older tests, the familiar thresholds were 50 in each component for Competent English, 65 in each for Proficient English and 79 in each for Superior English.

On or before 6 Aug 202550 in each65 in each79 in each

That transition is why a search for pte score for 189 visa can produce apparently contradictory answers. The correct first question is the test date. The second is whether the result is still valid at the time that matters for subclass 189. A transitional end date does not override the subclass-specific timing rules.

Do not mix score tables. Apply the score table that corresponds to the date and version of the PTE Academic test you actually sat. PTE Academic kept the same product name across the 7 August 2025 change, even though Home Affairs notes that the test and scores are different.

The Lowest Component Controls Your English Category

For the current PTE thresholds, the result is only as strong as the component that fails the next category. Three Superior-level components do not compensate for one component that is only Proficient. Likewise, three Proficient components cannot compensate for one score below the Competent floor if you are relying on the test to establish Competent English.

Example A
L 60 · R 61 · W 68 · S 77

Outcome: Competent English, 0 English points. Writing 68 misses the current Proficient writing minimum of 69.

Example B
L 72 · R 74 · W 86 · S 87

Outcome: Proficient English, 10 points. Speaking 87 is one point below the Superior minimum of 88.

Example C
L 72 · R 74 · W 86 · S 89

Outcome: Superior English, 20 points. Every component clears the current Superior threshold.

The safest way to read a score report is therefore to ignore the headline overall score for a moment and test listening, reading, writing and speaking against the four-component migration thresholds. Your best qualifying category is the highest level for which every required component minimum is met.

How PTE Changes Your Total Subclass 189 Points

The English score is only one part of the points test. The current Subclass 189 Points-tested stream requires at least 65 total points to be eligible for invitation. The current consolidated Migration Regulations 1994 continue to award 10 points for Proficient English and 20 points for Superior English under Schedule 6D; there is no separate English-points award for Competent English.

That makes pte score for 189 visa strategy an arithmetic question. If your non-English factors total 55 points, Competent English leaves you at 55, Proficient takes you to 65, and Superior takes you to 75. If your non-English factors already total 65, Proficient raises the total to 75 and Superior to 85. Those examples illustrate points arithmetic only; they do not predict an invitation.

65
Statutory points floor
Minimum total score for subclass 189 invitation eligibility.
10
Proficient uplift
Added to the total when Proficient English is established.
20
Superior uplift
Maximum English-language points under Schedule 6D.

The legal floor is not the same as a competitive invitation score. Home Affairs states that 65 points makes you eligible to be invited, not guaranteed to be invited. Its latest published SkillSelect round on 4 June 2026 showed minimum invited scores varying by occupation, from 65 for some occupations to 100 for others. The Department has also announced that the next subclass 189 invitation round is expected by 30 September 2026. See the current SkillSelect invitation-round results for the latest occupation-specific evidence rather than relying on a generic “safe score.”

This is also why English points should be planned alongside age, skilled employment, qualifications, Australian study, partner factors and any other applicable Schedule 6D categories. Australia Pathways’ guide to common subclass 189 mistakes is useful for checking EOI claims that extend beyond the English test.

Which PTE Target Should You Aim For?

Competent: enough for the English eligibility floor

If you already have a strong total from other factors, Competent English may be enough to satisfy the English requirement. For a current PTE test, that means at least L47, R48, W51 and S54. But it contributes zero English points, so it is usually not the optimal target for an applicant who needs English to improve the EOI score.

Proficient: the first 10-point jump

Proficient English is strategically important because it adds 10 points. For a current PTE Academic test the thresholds are L58, R59, W69 and S76. If your base profile is close to the 65-point floor—or close to a recent occupation-specific invitation level—this can be a meaningful change in your ranking position.

Superior: maximum English points

Superior English adds 20 points, the maximum available for English. The current PTE thresholds are L69, R70, W85 and S88. This target is demanding because writing and speaking are substantially higher than the Competent and Proficient thresholds. It is worth pursuing when the extra 10 points above Proficient materially strengthen the overall migration strategy, not simply because “higher is always better.”

If you are comparing approved test systems rather than committed to PTE, Australia Pathways also has current guides to the IELTS score for subclass 189 and the OET score for subclass 189. Different tests use different numerical scales, but Home Affairs maps them to the same Competent, Proficient and Superior English concepts.

Test Validity and the Invitation Date

Timing is a separate requirement from the score itself. Under the Migration Regulations, for an invited applicant the test used for Competent English must generally have been conducted within the three years immediately before the invitation date. The definitions of Proficient and Superior English apply equivalent three-year invitation timing. This makes the invitation date—not merely the date you first created the EOI—critical.

For pte score for 189 visa evidence, that means an old result can become unusable while an EOI remains active. A pre-7-August-2025 result may fall within the transitional acceptance window that runs to 6 August 2028 inclusive, yet still fail because it is more than three years old when you are invited. Conversely, a new qualifying score should be entered accurately into SkillSelect before invitation so the EOI reflects evidence you can substantiate.

01

Identify the Test Regime

Check whether your PTE was taken on or after 7 August 2025, or on or before 6 August 2025. Use only the matching score table.

02

Classify All Four Components

Find the highest English level for which listening, reading, writing and speaking all meet the required minimum.

03

Recalculate the Full Points Test

Add 0, 10 or 20 English points as appropriate, then verify every other claim using current rules and supporting evidence.

04

Check Timing Before Invitation

Make sure the test will satisfy the three-year invitation rule and keep the EOI updated before an invitation is issued.

Home Affairs also requires approved English testing to take place in a secure testing centre. Its English-language guidance states that fully online or at-home English tests are not accepted for Australian visa purposes. Check the current English language visa requirements before booking or relying on a test format.

PTE and Skills Assessment Are Separate Requirements

A qualifying migration English score does not replace a skills assessment. Subclass 189 applicants must have an occupation on the relevant skilled occupation list and a suitable skills assessment for that occupation. The assessing authority may have its own English, qualification, employment-evidence or professional-registration requirements, and those rules are not automatically identical to Home Affairs’ migration English rules.

For ICT applicants, for example, the Australian Computer Society assessment sits on a different track from the PTE points calculation. Australia Pathways’ RPL for ACS skills assessment page explains one skills-assessment route for applicants whose ICT knowledge is based substantially on professional experience. Treat that assessment issue separately from English points: passing one does not prove the other.

Common PTE Mistakes in a Subclass 189 EOI

  • Using one overall PTE score. The current migration thresholds are component-specific for listening, reading, writing and speaking.
  • Using the pre-2025 chart for a new test. New PTE tests from 7 August 2025 use the new asymmetric component thresholds.
  • Claiming 10 points for Competent English. Competent English satisfies the subclass minimum but Schedule 6D does not award English points for it.
  • Letting one component “average out.” A high score in another component does not compensate for a component below the target category.
  • Ignoring the test date. For invited applicants, the relevant English definitions use a three-year window tied to invitation.
  • Treating 65 as a guaranteed invitation score. It is the eligibility floor; actual invitation outcomes can be higher and differ by occupation.
  • Confusing migration English with registration or assessment English. A profession, regulator or assessing authority can impose a different standard.

A disciplined pte score for 189 visa check therefore has four layers: correct test-date table, all four component thresholds, correct 0/10/20 English-points classification, and a full EOI total that is defensible at invitation. This is more reliable than targeting a headline overall score or copying a chart without checking when it applies.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum current PTE score for subclass 189?

For PTE Academic taken on or after 7 August 2025, the Competent English minimums are 47 listening, 48 reading, 51 writing and 54 speaking. Competent English is required at invitation for the points-tested subclass 189 pathway, but it adds zero English points.

What PTE scores give 10 points?

For a current PTE Academic test, Proficient English requires at least 58 listening, 59 reading, 69 writing and 76 speaking. Meeting all four minimums gives 10 English-language points under Schedule 6D.

What PTE scores give 20 points?

For a current PTE Academic test, Superior English requires at least 69 listening, 70 reading, 85 writing and 88 speaking. Every component must meet its minimum to claim the 20 English points.

Is PTE 65 in each skill still worth 10 points?

It can be relevant to an eligible PTE Academic test taken on or before 6 August 2025, because the old Proficient English threshold was 65 in every component. For a new PTE test taken from 7 August 2025, use the current component thresholds instead: 58, 59, 69 and 76. The old result must also remain valid for your visa and invitation timing.

Does PTE 79 overall give 20 points?

No. An overall score by itself is not enough. For older tests, Superior English required 79 in each component. For current tests from 7 August 2025, the Superior component floors are 69 listening, 70 reading, 85 writing and 88 speaking.

Is 65 total points enough for a 189 invitation?

It is enough to meet the statutory points threshold for invitation eligibility, provided the other visa criteria are also met. It is not a guarantee of invitation. Home Affairs invitation rounds rank EOIs and the minimum invited score can vary by occupation and program settings.

Bottom Line

The current pte score for 189 visa thresholds for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025 are L47/R48/W51/S54 for Competent English, L58/R59/W69/S76 for Proficient English, and L69/R70/W85/S88 for Superior English. Those levels contribute 0, 10 and 20 English points respectively. Subclass 189 requires at least Competent English at invitation and at least 65 total points to be eligible for invitation.

The two details most likely to cause errors are the test date and the weakest component. If your PTE was taken on or before 6 August 2025, the legacy 50/65/79-in-each-component table may still apply within transition and validity limits. If your test is current, use the new component-specific thresholds. Then check the three-year invitation timing, recalculate the full points test and make sure every EOI claim can be supported by evidence. That is the correct way to turn a PTE result into a defensible subclass 189 points position.
