500 Visa English Requirement: Current IELTS, PTE, TOEFL Scores and Exemptions

The legal framework is more precise than the common shorthand “IELTS 6 for a student visa”. Clause 500.213 of the current Migration Regulations 1994 allows the Minister to require evidence of English proficiency and to specify both the required standards and exempt classes by legislative instrument. The currently operative instrument is the Migration (English Language Tests and Evidence Exemptions for Subclass 500 (Student) Visas) Instrument 2025, which commenced on 7 August 2025.

This article separates the visa rule from university or college admission rules. That distinction matters: meeting the Department of Home Affairs minimum does not automatically mean you meet your education provider’s English entry standard. Current Approved English Scores for Tests Taken From 7 August 2025

The current score settings below come from Schedule 1 of the 2025 legislative instrument and are also reproduced on the Home Affairs Student visa page. They apply to approved tests taken on or after 7 August 2025 when the applicant is relying on a test result rather than an exemption. In that setting, the 500 visa english requirement is determined by the approved test and the applicable course-package column.

For the current Subclass 500 visa table, these are expressed as overall, average or total scores rather than a universal minimum in each of the four components. That is different from the pre-7 August 2025 OET rule, which required at least B in each component. An education provider can still impose its own component-level admission requirement, so a visa-acceptable overall result should not be assumed to satisfy course entry.

Why Older PTE, TOEFL and Cambridge Scores Still Appear Online

The 7 August 2025 change did not simply erase every earlier test result. The 2025 instrument contains transitional rules for applicants who apply on or after commencement but rely on an approved test taken before 7 August 2025. Those earlier tests use the former score table, provided they remain within the applicable two-year timing rule.

The three figures shown for most tests mean: ordinary minimum; reduced minimum for at least 10 weeks of ELICOS, a standard or extended foundation program, or a specifically eligible pathway program; and reduced minimum for at least 20 weeks of ELICOS. The transition is especially important for PTE. A PTE Academic score of 47 from September 2025 can meet the current ordinary visa threshold, but a PTE score of 47 from July 2025 does not become sufficient merely because the later table uses 47. The test date determines which schedule applies.

Because Subclass 500 has a two-year test window, the old table remains relevant only while a pre-7 August 2025 result is still recent enough. Do not apply the general statement that some Australian visa English results may be usable for up to three years without checking the subclass-specific rule. How the Two-Year English Test Validity Rule Works

This timing distinction can matter in a long-running application. A result that was recent enough when a person started planning may no longer satisfy the relevant window when evidence is required. It is therefore safer to calculate from the actual test date and the relevant visa event rather than assuming a certificate has a fixed “expiry date” printed by the test provider.

Who Is Exempt From Providing the Subclass 500 English Test Evidence?

Section 7 of the 2025 instrument specifies classes of applicants to whom the English test requirement in clause 500.213(1) does not apply. An exemption is not the same as “having good English”; it is a legal category. If you rely on one, you should be able to document why you fall within it.

If you claim an exemption, provide the evidence that establishes the exemption rather than simply omitting a test result and assuming the reason will be inferred.

ELICOS, Foundation and Pathway Programs: When the Lower Score Applies

The lower scores are conditional, not a general discount for applicants who plan to improve their English later. For the 10-week ELICOS route, the ELICOS must accompany the principal course and be intended to commence after the Student visa application is made. For the 20-week route, at least 20 weeks of accompanying ELICOS is required and the principal course must be intended to commence after the application.

A standard or extended foundation program can also engage the middle score column. An “eligible pathway program” is narrower: it is a registered course specifically listed in Schedule 2 of the current instrument. A provider describing a course commercially as a pathway does not, by itself, establish that the visa concession applies. Verify the CRICOS course code, institution and program against the legislative schedule.

If you are using ELICOS to bridge a language gap, check both the visa rule and the provider’s admissions rule before accepting an offer. The visa may accept a lower score with a qualifying package while the university or college can still require a different English profile for entry. Visa English Is Not the Same as Course English or Genuine Student Evidence

Three separate issues are often merged into one. First, the 500 visa english requirement is the migration-law evidence rule discussed in this article. Second, the education provider decides whether you satisfy its academic and English admission criteria. Third, the Student visa has a separate Genuine Student criterion, which examines whether you are genuinely coming to Australia to study in light of your circumstances and supporting evidence.
