OET Score for 189 Visa: Current Thresholds for 0, 10, and 20 Points
oet score for 189 visa applicants is now a component-by-component calculation: for OET tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, Competent English requires at least 290 listening, 310 reading, 290 writing and 330 speaking; Proficient English requires 350, 360, 380 and 360; and Superior English requires 390, 400, 420 and 400. For the Skilled Independent visa subclass 189, those levels translate to the English eligibility floor with 0 English points, 10 points and 20 points respectively.
Do not use one overall OET number. Home Affairs specifies minimum scores in each of the four components. A result is only as strong as the component that falls lowest against the migration threshold you want to claim. The current Subclass 189 Points-tested stream requires at least Competent English at invitation and at least 65 total points to be eligible for invitation.
Current OET Thresholds for Subclass 189
The current oet score for 189 visa planning depends first on the date you sat the test. The Department of Home Affairs changed the approved English-test framework on 7 August 2025, and the Migration (Specification of Language Tests, Test Scores and Passports) Instrument 2025 sets the new numerical OET thresholds. The change is important because older articles often still describe OET only with letter grades such as B and A.
| English level | Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Competent 0 English points | 290 | 310 | 290 | 330 |
| Proficient 10 English points | 350 | 360 | 380 | 360 |
| Superior 20 English points | 390 | 400 | 420 | 400 |
These figures apply to approved OET tests taken on or after 7 August 2025. Home Affairs publishes the same component thresholds on its current pages for Competent English, Proficient English and Superior English. Home Affairs also notes that OET is designed for health professionals and that its visa-purpose scoring presentation moved from the former alphabetical framework to numerical scores from 7 August 2025.
Each component must reach the relevant minimum. A high listening or reading score cannot compensate for writing or speaking that falls below the threshold. The points test awards 10 points for Proficient English and 20 points for Superior English; there is no separate English-points award for Competent English.
Why Older OET Advice Can Look Completely Different
If your OET was taken on or before 6 August 2025, the previous rules can still matter. Home Affairs says eligible pre-change test results may continue to be used for visa purposes until 6 August 2028 inclusive, depending on the visa and the applicable validity period. For invited skilled migration, however, the timing rules are decisive: the Migration Regulations require the relevant English test to have been conducted within the three years immediately before invitation for Competent, Proficient and Superior English claims.
The legacy OET thresholds are unusual. For tests taken on or before 6 August 2025, Home Affairs lists B in each component for Competent English and also B in each component for Proficient English, while A in each component is Superior English. That means an eligible legacy OET result with B in all four components can support Proficient English and therefore 10 English points in the General Skilled Migration points test, subject to the result still being valid at invitation. This is one reason the oet score for 189 visa question cannot be answered safely without asking when the test was taken.
How OET Converts Into 189 Visa Points
The key distinction is between an English requirement and English points. Subclass 189 requires at least Competent English at invitation. Separately, Schedule 6D of the Migration Regulations awards 10 points for Proficient English and 20 points for Superior English. The current consolidated Regulations continue that 10/20 structure, including in the registered 2026 compilation of Schedule 6D of the Migration Regulations 1994.
Home Affairs states that you need at least 65 total points to be eligible for invitation under the points-tested subclass 189 pathway, but 65 is an eligibility floor rather than a guaranteed invitation score. Your invitation, if issued, will state the points score you must be able to substantiate. Use the official Home Affairs points calculator to model the complete profile rather than evaluating English in isolation.
Outcome: Competent, 0 English points. Writing is below the Proficient minimum of 380, even though the other components meet or exceed their Proficient thresholds.
Outcome: Proficient, 10 English points. Speaking misses the Superior threshold by one point, so the result falls back to the highest complete category met.
Outcome: Superior, 20 English points. Every component clears the current Superior threshold.
Those examples are arithmetic illustrations, not invitation predictions. If your non-English factors total 55 points, Proficient English would bring you to 65 and Superior English to 75. If your base total is 65 with Competent English, Proficient would lift it to 75 and Superior to 85. The strategic value of a higher oet score for 189 visa purposes is therefore the number of defensible points it adds to the whole EOI, not the prestige of a particular test score.
The Weakest Component Controls the Migration Category
For current tests, an applicant may have excellent overall OET performance and still fail to reach the migration level they expected. Home Affairs does not average the four component thresholds for these English categories. If three components are Superior but one is only Proficient, the English category is Proficient. If three are Proficient but one only reaches Competent, the applicant has Competent English for this calculation.
This matters particularly for writing. The current Proficient writing minimum is 380 and the Superior writing minimum is 420, both higher than the corresponding listening thresholds. Applicants should therefore build a test strategy around the component most likely to limit the visa category, not around a broad “good OET result” target. For comparison with another approved English test, Australia Pathways has a current guide to the Cambridge C1 Advanced score for the 189 visa, using the same Competent/Proficient/Superior points logic.
The oet score for 189 visa calculation is also distinct from professional registration, skills assessment or employer requirements. A health practitioner may face a separate English standard from a registration board or assessing authority. Meeting one organisation’s English rule does not automatically prove a Home Affairs migration points category, and satisfying Home Affairs does not automatically establish professional registration eligibility. Always separate the migration test from the profession-specific test.
Test Format, Validity and SkillSelect Timing
Home Affairs requires approved English tests to be taken in a secure testing centre and specifically lists OET@Home among the fully online or at-home test formats it does not accept for Australian visa purposes. The Department’s English language visa requirements page also explains the 7 August 2025 change and the transition for earlier results.
For subclass 189, the relevant English position is tested at invitation. This is more important than many applicants realise because an EOI can remain active for up to two years. A result that was valid when you first entered it can become too old before an invitation arrives. Home Affairs says you can update your EOI before invitation, including when you improve your English language proficiency; see the official guidance on keeping a SkillSelect EOI up to date.
Check the test date
Decide whether the current numerical thresholds or the pre-7-August-2025 letter-grade rules apply.
Check all four components
Identify the highest English category for which listening, reading, writing and speaking all meet the minimum.
Recalculate the total points score
Add 0, 10 or 20 English points as appropriate, then verify every other points claim against evidence.
Update SkillSelect before invitation
If you gain a new valid result, update the EOI accurately before invitation. After invitation, you cannot simply revise the invited score by editing the EOI.
This sequence is the safest way to use an oet score for 189 visa decision. It prevents three common errors at once: applying the wrong score table, counting points from an incomplete English category and relying on a test that will not satisfy the timing requirement when invitation occurs.
When Retaking OET May Be Worth It
A retest has migration value only if it changes a defensible outcome. The most obvious case is moving from Competent to Proficient, which can add 10 points. Moving from Proficient to Superior can add another 10. A retest can also be sensible when an existing result is approaching the three-year invitation limit, especially if you expect to remain in SkillSelect for some time.
Do not assume, however, that another 10 points guarantees invitation. Subclass 189 invitations depend on more than the statutory 65-point floor, including program settings, occupation availability and the relative position of other EOIs. Australia Pathways’ current guide to understanding 189 points and invitation competitiveness explains why a published or rumoured invitation score should not be confused with the legal minimum.
Testing is also only one cost in the skilled migration process. If you are deciding whether to sit OET again, include the broader expenses of skills assessment, health examinations, police certificates, translations and the visa application charge in the decision. The Australia Pathways 189 visa cost guide for 2026 maps those cost layers separately.
Common OET Mistakes in a Subclass 189 EOI
- Using the old B/A chart for a new test. Tests taken on or after 7 August 2025 use the numerical component thresholds.
- Relying on an average or overall impression. Home Affairs applies minimums to each of the four components.
- Claiming Superior because three components are Superior. All four must meet the Superior minimum for 20 points.
- Ignoring the invitation date. For invited applicants, the relevant English test must satisfy the three-year timing rule at invitation.
- Using OET@Home. Home Affairs does not accept fully online or at-home English tests for visa purposes.
- Equating migration English with professional registration. Health-sector regulators and assessing authorities can have separate requirements.
- Treating 65 points as an invitation guarantee. It is the eligibility threshold, not a promise of selection.
Before claiming any oet score for 189 visa points, save the official score report, record the test date and calculate the highest complete migration English category supported by all four components. Then cross-check the EOI total using the Home Affairs calculator and make sure the English result will still satisfy the invitation timing rule. That documentation discipline is more important than trying to maximise a headline number that cannot be proven later.
Bottom Line
For a current OET taken on or after 7 August 2025, the oet score for 189 visa is 290 listening, 310 reading, 290 writing and 330 speaking for Competent English; 350, 360, 380 and 360 for Proficient English; and 390, 400, 420 and 400 for Superior English. In the subclass 189 points test, those levels mean 0, 10 and 20 English points respectively, while at least Competent English is required at invitation.
If your OET was taken on or before 6 August 2025, the legacy rules can still apply within the transition and validity limits: B in each component can satisfy Proficient English and A in each can satisfy Superior English. Because subclass 189 is invitation-based, always test the result against the three-year invitation window rather than relying only on the transition end date. The safest strategy is to verify the date, verify every component, verify the total points score and keep the EOI aligned with evidence you can produce.
