IELTS Score for 190 Visa: Minimum Bands and 0, 10, or 20 English Points
For a primary applicant invited for a subclass 190 visa, the federal requirement is at least Competent English. For IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training, that means at least 6.0 in each of the four test components. Competent English itself contributes 0 points for English. Proficient English, IELTS 7 in each component, contributes 10 points; Superior English, IELTS 8 in each, contributes 20 points. The separate state or territory nomination for subclass 190 contributes 5 points. See the current Department of Home Affairs subclass 190 criteria.
Competent English
Federal English minimum for the invited primary applicant; 0 English points.
Proficient English
10 points under the skilled migration points test.
Superior English
20 points under the skilled migration points test.
These thresholds were checked on 9 September 2026 against the current Home Affairs definitions of Competent English, Proficient English and Superior English. The current test-score framework is set by the Migration (Specification of Language Tests, Test Scores and Passports) Instrument 2025 (LIN 25/016), which commenced on 7 August 2025.
The Minimum IELTS Score Is Not the Same as the Best IELTS Target
If you search for the minimum ielts score for 190 visa applications, the answer is 6 in each component. That answer is legally important but strategically incomplete. Subclass 190 is points tested. A candidate who merely meets Competent English receives no English-language points, while a candidate who reaches Proficient or Superior English can materially change the points total used in SkillSelect and in state nomination assessment.
The 0/10/20 structure comes from Schedule 6D of the Migration Regulations 1994. It is separate from the 5 points awarded for a valid subclass 190 nomination by a state or territory. This distinction prevents a common calculation error: “190 gives me five points” is true, but those nomination points do not replace the English requirement and are not English points.
The subclass 190 criteria require the invited applicant to have at least Competent English at the time of invitation. The points claimed also need to be supportable when assessed. Treat an EOI score as a set of evidence-backed claims, not as a forecast of what you expect to achieve later.
Every IELTS Component Matters
An overall IELTS band can hide a weaker component. For migration English levels, that weaker component is often decisive. A result such as Listening 8.5, Reading 8.0, Writing 7.5 and Speaking 8.0 has a very strong overall profile, but it is not Superior English because Writing is below 8.0. It is Proficient English because every component is at least 7.0.
Scores: 6.5 / 7 / 7 / 8
Classification: Competent English
English points: 0
Scores: 7 / 7 / 7 / 7.5
Classification: Proficient English
English points: 10
Scores: 8.5 / 8 / 7.5 / 8
Classification: Proficient English
English points: 10, not 20
Scores: 8 / 8 / 8 / 8
Classification: Superior English
English points: 20
This component rule is why a migration study plan should target the lowest likely band rather than the predicted overall score. For a detailed format comparison, Australia Pathways explains IELTS Academic versus General Training for Australian permanent residence.
Why the Overall IELTS Band Can Mislead You
A frequent misunderstanding about the ielts score for 190 visa applicants is to read the overall band as though it determines migration points. It does not. An overall 7.0 can coexist with a component below 7.0, in which case the applicant has not demonstrated Proficient English through IELTS. Likewise, an overall 8.0 does not establish Superior English if any one component is below 8.0. The classification follows the lowest component relative to the prescribed threshold.
This matters when planning a retake. Suppose your scores are Listening 8.5, Reading 8.0, Speaking 8.0 and Writing 7.5. Improving Writing from 7.5 to 8.0 may change the English points outcome from 10 to 20 even if the overall band changes only slightly. In that situation, the useful target is not “raise my overall IELTS”; it is “bring every component to the Superior threshold.” Conversely, if one component remains at 6.5, a collection of 8s elsewhere cannot produce Proficient English. For points-tested migration, balance across all four components can be more consequential than a higher average.
IELTS Academic or General Training for Subclass 190?
For the Home Affairs migration English categories discussed here, both IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training are accepted, and the IELTS thresholds are the same: 6 each for Competent, 7 each for Proficient and 8 each for Superior English. Therefore, the federal ielts score for 190 visa purposes is not higher merely because you choose Academic rather than General Training.
However, visa English and occupation-specific requirements are different systems. A skills assessing authority, professional registration body, university or licensing regulator may impose its own test type, score profile or recency rule. If your occupation is regulated or your skills assessment depends on English evidence, check that authority before choosing the exam. The most convenient migration test is not necessarily the test that satisfies every other stage of your pathway.
IELTS is also not the only Home Affairs-approved test. The current English-language framework includes other approved secure test-centre options. If you are deciding between major alternatives, the Australia Pathways comparison of TOEFL versus IELTS for Australia PR can help frame the choice.
Home Affairs requires an approved English test taken in a secure testing environment and does not accept fully online or at-home versions such as IELTS Online for Australian visa purposes. Check the current Home Affairs English-language requirements before booking.
How IELTS Changes a Subclass 190 Points Score
The federal points test uses a qualifying score of at least 65, but reaching 65 does not guarantee an invitation or a state nomination. State and territory programs apply their own nomination criteria, priorities and selection methods. The useful way to model English is therefore not “What is the minimum?” but “What happens to my total at each defensible English level?”
Assumption: 50 points before English and before the 190 nomination.
IELTS 6 each: 50 + 0 + 5 = 55
IELTS 7 each: 50 + 10 + 5 = 65
IELTS 8 each: 50 + 20 + 5 = 75
Assumption: 60 points before English and before the 190 nomination.
IELTS 6 each: 60 + 0 + 5 = 65
IELTS 7 each: 60 + 10 + 5 = 75
IELTS 8 each: 60 + 20 + 5 = 85
Assumption: 65 points before English and before the 190 nomination.
IELTS 6 each: 65 + 0 + 5 = 70
IELTS 7 each: 65 + 10 + 5 = 80
IELTS 8 each: 65 + 20 + 5 = 90
These are illustrative arithmetic examples, not invitation forecasts. They isolate English and the fixed five nomination points while holding every other factor constant. Your real score can depend on age, qualifications, skilled employment, Australian study, partner factors and other Schedule 6D criteria. More importantly, a state may assess far more than the bare points total. Occupation demand, residence, employment, earnings, commitment to the jurisdiction or invitation ranking can matter depending on the program currently operating.
That is why treating IELTS 6 as the “required score” can be misleading in practice. The minimum ielts score for 190 visa eligibility can leave a candidate at 65 or below, while an additional 10 or 20 English points can materially alter the EOI profile. Yet more points still do not create an entitlement to nomination. Before relying on a claimed total, review Australia Pathways’ guide to common subclass 190 mistakes and protecting your points.
IELTS Validity and Invitation Timing
For anyone comparing the ielts score for 190 visa pathways over time, English-test timing deserves as much attention as the score itself. Under the current framework relevant to points-tested skilled visas, the test evidence supporting Competent, Proficient or Superior English is tied to the period before invitation. A result that was comfortably current when you created an EOI can become too old while the EOI remains in the system. This matters because SkillSelect allows an EOI to exist for a period without guaranteeing when—or whether—an invitation will arrive.
For the ielts score for 190 visa strategy, the practical rule is therefore to track the test date, not just the band scores. If your result is approaching the applicable evidence window, do not assume that an old result will remain usable simply because it was valid when entered into SkillSelect. Update your EOI when your circumstances or evidence change, and make sure every point claimed can be supported at the legally relevant time.
There is also a transition issue for tests taken on or before 6 August 2025. Home Affairs states that results from the previous English-test framework may in some circumstances remain usable through the transition period, potentially until 6 August 2028 depending on the visa and applicable rules. That does not mean every old IELTS result is automatically valid until that date. The subclass-specific timing requirement and the date of your test still need to be checked. For older scores, verify the exact position rather than applying a blanket three-year assumption.
Can a Passport Replace IELTS?
For Competent English, Home Affairs provides a passport-based pathway for citizens who hold a valid passport issued by Canada, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland, the United Kingdom or the United States. An eligible passport holder may therefore satisfy the Competent English requirement without relying on IELTS.
But this should not be confused with receiving English-language points. The points test awards 10 points for Proficient English and 20 for Superior English. Those higher classifications require qualifying evidence under the prescribed test framework; simply holding one of the listed passports establishes Competent English, not Proficient or Superior English. A passport-holder seeking a stronger points total may therefore still have a strategic reason to take an approved test.
A Practical IELTS Decision Sequence for Subclass 190
Calculate Your Score Without English or Nomination
Start with the points you can already substantiate. Do not add the five subclass 190 nomination points before a nomination exists, and do not add English points above the level your actual test evidence supports.
Model IELTS 6, 7 and 8 in Every Component
Compare three defensible totals: Competent English adds 0, Proficient adds 10 and Superior adds 20. This shows whether improving one weak component could move you into a different points band.
Check Your Occupation and Target State Separately
Federal visa eligibility does not equal state nomination eligibility. Verify the current occupation settings, nomination pathway, invitation method and any state-specific English requirement or priority before deciding that IELTS 6 is enough.
Protect the Evidence Through Invitation
Record the test date, retain the official result, update SkillSelect when needed and avoid claiming a higher English category until every component meets it. A points claim is useful only if it remains verifiable when the invitation and visa application are assessed.
- Confirm that all four component scores meet the level you are claiming.
- Check whether your test was taken under the current post-7 August 2025 framework or an earlier transitional framework.
- Confirm the test was taken through an accepted secure testing method.
- Check the evidence timing against your expected invitation date.
- Verify any separate English requirement imposed by your skills assessor, professional regulator or target state.
- Keep your EOI accurate if your score, test validity or other points factors change.
Bottom Line
The federal answer is simple: the minimum ielts score for 190 visa applicants is 6.0 in Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, which is Competent English and gives no English points. 7.0 in each component is Proficient English and gives 10 points. 8.0 in each component is Superior English and gives 20 points. A valid state or territory nomination for subclass 190 adds another five points separately.
The strategic answer is more individual. If your non-English score plus nomination is already strong, IELTS 6 may satisfy the federal English floor. If English is the factor that takes you to or materially above the 65-point qualifying threshold, IELTS 7 or 8 can be consequential. But no IELTS result guarantees state nomination or a visa invitation, and current state criteria must be checked independently. The correct target is the lowest score that satisfies both your legal requirements and your evidence-based points strategy—not simply the minimum shown on a generic visa checklist.
For comparison with the independent skilled pathway, see the Australia Pathways guide to the IELTS score for the subclass 189 visa. The English points architecture is closely related, while the nomination mechanics are different.
